May 12, 2025, Cairo, Egypt – The International Day of Nurses 2025, celebrated on May 12, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the United Arab Emirates host the regional launch of the State of World’s Nursing 2025, completing the global launch.
While we honor extraordinary contributions and the resilience of nurses in the eastern Mediterranean region, the 2025 report presents the most recent tests on global nursing workforce, including education, employment, migration, regulation, working conditions, leadership and more.

The nurses, whose set of skills is applicable in almost all the provisions of provision of the health service, include the largest component of the health workforce in the eastern Mediterranean region. But there are persistent and expanded inequalities in the nursing workforce globally, with 78% of nurses who only serve 49% of the global population.
The nursing force is essential to reach SDG 3 as regards “good health and well -being” by 2030, in particular for universal health coverage and the strengthening of basic health care. However, the progress is off -track and without targeted actions, the gaps of the nursing labor force will persist over 2030, especially in the most vulnerable regions. “Says Dr. Hanan Balkhy, regional director who region of the eastern Mediterranean.
While the countries of the Region have made progress since 2020, when the first report was published, the inequalities in the distribution of nurses, in density, education, wages and working conditions persist inside and among the Member States. After the African region, the eastern Mediterranean has the second lower total density of nurses (15.5 per 10,000 population), with a huge disparity ranging from 1.2 to 83.7.
Future projections paint a dark picture without a sufficient urgent action being undertaken. The Region will see little or no growth between 2023 and 2030 if no action is undertaken and it is expected that 24% of the 4.1 million global defaults in 2030 is expected if current trends continue.
The Region must also face multiple conflicts and emergencies. In 2024, 63% (1025) of total attacks on health care occurred in the eastern Mediterranean, equal to 79% (749) deaths. The safety of healthcare professionals, most of whom is a nurse, must be guaranteed.
Urgent investments are needed in education, employment and conservation of nurses. Strengthen the information systems of the health workforce, create investment plans of the workforce, face gender prejudices and local disparities in the education and the health labor market, using existing tools to evaluate the work environments and exploit digital technologies, are among the key political recommendations of the relationship.
The results of the report equip the political managers and data planners and tests in support of political dialogue at national level and make informed decisions on investments in nursing, ultimately strengthening primary health care systems and by advanced universal health coverage.

The WHO regional tip initiative on investments in a resilient health care force intensifies the actions to strengthen the health workforce. The next 5 years will be crucial. Decisive political measures, robust investments, collaborative strategies and accelerated actions are urgently necessary to respect global health commitments by 2030.
The tests contained in the 2025 report will also help to inform the discussions to the seventy-eighth World Health Assembly, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 19-27 May, to which the Member States will decide to extend the Global strategic directions for nursing and obstetrics 2021-2025 Until 2030, as recommended by the 156th Executive Committee in February 2025.
