President Donald Trump traveled to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to personally convince Holdouts within his own party in order to take a massive account in order to drive a large part of the GOP agenda.
Trump ignored the divisions to the outside world, which still ended the efforts to complete the legislation before a period of self -imposed period to coordinate the bill before the commemoration day. Instead, he explained that his party was uniform.
“This is really just a lack of lecture. We have a very uniform house and we have a very uniform Senate,” said Trump when he entered the meeting. “I don’t think the Republican party has ever been so uniform.”
It is rare that a single draft law complies with the majority of the legislative agenda of a president, but Trump has pushed the Republicans in congress to say goodbye to tax cuts, expenses, deregulation and an increase in border security financing in what he calls “one, large, large law”.
The letter of legal provisions that meets these claims has exposed cracks within the house and the Senate conducted by GOP, which fully derail the law.
After a handful of Republican members had a budget committee on Friday, the GOP leaders from House spent the weekend with holdouts to get closer to the consensus.
The same committee promoted the draft law late on Sunday evening – with the original holdouts “present”.
Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy said He voted against the present “out of respect for the Republican conference and the president to advance the bill”.
Roy and its members of Freedom Freedom Caucus left the coordination that they were made progress, but they have to see more concessions in order to support the legislation later this week in the votes.
Trump concentrated on another holdout, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, who insisted that he could not support the invoice.
“I think he should be elected from the office,” said Trump. “And I just don’t think he understands the government.”
Trump has often threatened with the political careers of Republicans who do not obey him.
Pressing of the Pennsylvania Avenue
HAS has long praised him for being involved and available during the entire legislative process.
“Every step of the way, if there were questions, had to be made as final decisions, [President Trump] Was always a call away, “the majority of the house majority, Steve Scalisue, R-La., To report last week.” And he will continue to be. “
Trump has promised to extend the tax cuts from his first term and add new ones, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and no tax on social security. These cuts have contributed to the costs of the invoice.
He was less promoted about how the legislation should be paid or how long provisions should take – and he did not take any page in the debate between the House’s GOP fractions.
The leaders of Trump and GOP have to convince three main groups to support the legislative template of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s self -imposed period at the Memorial Day:
Before the meeting, Trump pressed skepticism to raise the upper limit for the deduction for state and local taxes (salt) that this would mainly benefit California, New York and Illinois, and increased their governors – and claimed without evidence that they had manipulated the presidential elections.
“I would have won California, I would have won New York. I even think I would have won Illinois,” said Trump.
Members of the Freedom Caucus say that the invoice does not lead to a significant reduction in the deficit. They secured some concessions – namely the acceleration of the implementation of the work requirements for Medicaid – but that frustrated the members who feared that the existing house could If the reporting for more than 8.6 million people threatens Enrolled in the program and could become an important problem in the intermediate elections next year. The Salt advocates are also generally with the hard-line cost of cost.
Two former Trump helpers who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not justified to describe private conversations described Trump as very convincing in one-on-one discussions and called him the “ultimate narrow”, which makes it difficult for the members to say no.
Trump recently strengthened the pressure on the holdout in his party Social mediaAsked his party to unite behind the bill – and warned that he is behind it.
“We don’t need ‘stands’ in the Republican Party,” said Trump in the post office.
