London Pulse has returned to the top of the Netball Super League with a 63-53 derby victory against the London Maverks at the Wembley Arena.
Loughborough Lightning had gone to the top of a 71-59 victory over Leeds’ Rhinos, but Pulse replied returning to win following a defeat by Nottingham Forest last time.
They led 35-22 to half time and, despite the Maverick reduced the four-point deficit with almost 12 minutes left, Pulse ended strongly to go clear two points at the top of the Netball Super League table.
Lightning had put some pressure on the impulse with a display insured at home to separate the second bottom Leds rhinos the day before.
The part of Vic Burgess is aiming to conquer a third consecutive title and seemed to heat up to the task in this fifth consecutive victory.
Only one point separated the two parts going in the last five minutes of the second quarter before Lightning turned the vine in the “Super Shot” period, overcoming the rhinos of nine points for two.
They moved later after the break, finishing the third quarter leading 54-39 to the Sir David Wallace Arena.
And while visitors worked hard to reduce that deficit in the closing phases, Lightning always seemed able to capitalize on their greater precision of shooting.
They concluded with a success rate of 86%, compared to 82% of Rhinos, landing six more goals (46-43) and three others in the “Super Shot” period (11-8).
The first two will meet when Pulse Host Lightning at the Copper Box Arena in the next match on Sunday 18 May.
Elsewhere, Manchester Thunder got a 72-58 victory over the Nottingham forest to go to fourth place on the table.
