When we committed to eradicating Poliomielite in 1988, the world was different.
Today, conflict, climate change and economic tension make our mission more difficult.
However, our goal is at hand.
Since 1988, we have reduced the cases of Poliomielite of 99.9 percent, eliminated the wild poliovirus in five regions of the WHO and protected over 20 million people from paralysis.
But the last mile is the most difficult and 99.9 percent is not enough.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the final borders, but they are making real progress.
In the places that face outbreaks of poliovirus variants, including Djibouti, the occupied Palestinian territory, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen – we are reducing vaccination efforts and strengthening surveillance systems to protect each child.
However, giving two drops to each child is not as simple as it once was.
In Gaza, the ceased the fire of February 2025 allowed us to reach 46,000 more children than the previous vaccination campaigns. However, the intensified attacks, a block of aid and private communities of water, food and medicines suspended the fourth vaccination round.
