The use of tobacco is the main cause of global preventable death and a great health challenge in the eastern Mediterranean region.
It is estimated that 37 million children aged between 13 and 15 years old worldwide use tobacco.
Our region has the highest youth smoke rates in the world.
An alarming 15 % of the boys in our region uses tobacco and the number of boys and girls who take smoke is increasing.
In countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt, overall smoke rates are among the highest global level.
We have to act and protect the next generation.
By strengthening the tobacco control measures – how to ban flavors, put graphic health notices on packaging, limit advertising and increase taxes – we can really make the difference.
The tobacco industry aggressively markets products such as electronic cigarettes and nicotine bags for our young people.
These products are highly compelling and harmful, they influence brain development and leading to permanent health problems.
Let’s stay together and call it clear: no more tricks. No more traps.
We combine for a future without tobacco.
