June 4, 2025, Cairo, Egypt – Day of the Blood Donor of the World (WBDD), observed every year on June 14, serves to raise awareness of the need for blood and bright blood products and thank the voluntary and unpaid blood donors for their blood gifts.
A blood service that allows patients to access blood and safe blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. The banner of this year, give blood, give hope: together we save lives, underlines the life -saving impact of blood transfusion and how, by donating regularly, we can all make a role in the construction of a healthier and more compassionate world.
In low -income countries, women in fertile age and children under 5 are among the most frequent recipients of blood. Blood transfusions provide life -saving support for women suffering from bleeding linked to pregnancy and childbirth and for children suffering from severe anemia due to malaria or malnutrition.
Access to safe blood remains an urgent concern in the eastern Mediterranean region (WHO) (WHO) where many countries descend below WHO recommended a minimum of 10 blood donations per 1000 people per year. Each blood donation has the potential to save up to 3 lives. Despite some progress, unpaid voluntary donations often represent less than 50% of the blood flu.
In a region that deals with complex challenges due to the continuous humanitarian emergencies, blood deficiency can lead to potentially lethal situations for vulnerable groups and victims of conflicts or disasters.

To ensure that anyone who needs a transfusion has access to safe blood, the countries rely on a pool of voluntary and unpaid donors who give blood regularly. A program of strong and sustainable blood donors, with an active and active participation of the community, is essential to satisfy the need for blood.

As part of the activities that report WBDD 2025, the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Office of the WHO country in Egypt, in collaboration with the Egyptian National Transfusion Service, are organizing a blood donation guide in the regional office in which the WHO staff can give blood and contribute to this moment.
