Owen Farrell could return to the Saracens next season as an accident coverage – if he accepts a salary in less than what is currently in Racing 92.
Farrell headed towards France in 2024 after 16 years to the Saracens, but his opening campaign was spoiled by an injury to the groin and the poor shape of the team, leading to suggestions that was observing a passage in England.
In Sarries it is allowed to bring a substitute for accidents for Alex Lozowski, whose problem of Achilles is likely to put it for a long time until Christmas – but the rugby director Mark McCall says that there are obstacles to overcome if Farrell reunites at the Premiership Club.
McCall, whose team has lost the play-offs this season despite having beaten Bath in the last game of the regular countryside, told the journalists: “We think we are a little vulnerable to 10.
“The way the process works is to fill in a list of people you think can be suitable.
“Owen was not on the list because he is under contract with the races, but there are some noises that could be ready to look at him and could be ready to look at him.
“A couple of things must happen. One, the races must let go and have to let him go to a price that a club is willing to pay. And secondly he must accept a salary that is less than him.
“If Owen enters the list, it looks like a fairly good option due to the quality -price ratio it would bring.
“It’s not just about having talent, it’s about being able to think correctly on the field. Owen is obviously one of the best in this.”
McCall feels that Farrell would help to grow the young salami of the Saracens Fergus Burke and Louie Johnson, adding: “Owen and Louis, in particular, already have a very strong relationship. They speak at least every month.
“Owen is so willing to share his knowledge and experience with younger players. For our young talents who are developing, it could be a great thing to have it there.”
