Doctors say they created a custom-made gene editing treatment within seven months and used it to treat babies in a deadly metabolic state. The rapid fire attempt to rewrite a child’s DNA mark was only adjusted when gene editing was first adjusted to treat one individual.
A treated baby, Kyle “KJ” Muldoon Jr., suffers from a rare metabolic state caused by a rare genetic error. Researchers say attempts to correct errors show that a high level of precision new types of gene editors provide.
The project also highlights what some experts call a growing crisis in gene editing technology. That’s because even if the technology can cure thousands of genetic conditions, most are extremely rare, and companies cannot recover the cost of developing their treatment. Please read the entire story.

Access to experimental treatments is expanding across the US
– Jessica Hamzerou
A few weeks ago, I was in Washington, DC for a gathering of scientists, policymakers and longevity enthusiasts. They were coming together to discuss ways to speed up along the development of drugs and other treatments that could prolong the lifespan of humans.
One approach that emerged was to make experimental drugs easier to access. Now, Montana has passed a new bill that sets out exactly how clinics sell the state’s experimental, unproven treatments to those who want them.
Passing the bill could make Montana something like a US hub for experimental treatment. But it represents a broader trend: sneaking up on rights to try across the US. and potentially dangerous departures from evidence-based medical care. Please read the entire story.
