New data show both imports and exports with the USA when Canada expands trade relationships with other countries.
Canada’s trade with the United States fell in March, but an increase in exports to other countries has contributed to comparing the downward layer.
According to Statistics Canada, which was published by Statistics Canada on Tuesday, exports to the United States sank by 6.6 percent during the month, while imports from the USA decreased by 2.9 percent.
In March, total exports fell by 0.2 percent mainly to lower prices, while imports fell by 1.5 percent.
Canada’s trade deficit of $ 1 billion (1.4 billion US dollars) in February to $ 367 million in March. The commercial surplus with the United States fell to $ 6.1 billion ($ 8.4 billion).
“This decline was almost completely compensated for by a significant increase in exports to other countries than in the United States,” said the agency and emphasized an increase of 24.8 percent in overseas programs. Canada increased the exports of gold in Great Britain, crude oil to the Netherlands and various goods to Germany.
The exports of motor vehicles and parts also increased, which the US tariffs aimed at the car sector. The exports of pharmaceuticals and uranium to the USA and in pork to Asian markets decreased. Natural gas exports also fell.
Stahlexports fell while aluminum exports rose for a fourth month in a row. The steel imports decreased, but aluminum imports rose because both products were exposed to 25 percent US tariffs.
Analysts have warned that the full effects of the tariffs do not yet have to be seen. Canada should “prepare for the fact that the headwind for trade on the trade with the worst trade conflict will take place in the upcoming quarters,” said the TD Economics Analyst Marc Ercolao in a research note.
Carney and Trump meet
The merchant dates were published on the day on which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was met with US President Donald Trump in Washington, DC, to discuss tense trade and security relationships.
Carney won the elections last week with a promise to rise Trump and his first agenda in America. He said the tense relationship between the two countries could never be the same again.
At the beginning of March, the United States imposed wide tariffs to Canadian goods before announcing several reductions and exceptions, even as tariffs for cars, aluminum, steel and potash. Canada has thrown back with countermeasures.
“Canada and the United States are strongest when we work together -and this work starts now,” said Carney on the social media platform X when he arrived in Washington, DC on Monday evening.
