It is an honor to join you today, and I thank the President his excellence: Saleh Al-Hasnawi, Minister of Health of the Republic of Iraq-For this important opportunity.
The World Health Organization greatly appreciates its long -standing partnership with the League of Arab States.
Our cooperation is rooted in a shared commitment in improving life and health throughout the Arab region, through solidarity, the action based on evidence and a collective will to advance health for everyone.
Together, we made significant progress.
Our joint results include the regional nursing and obstetric strategy, 1 the MultiSettarial Arab strategy for maternal, childish and adolescent health, 2 the Arab strategy on health and the environment, 3 and the Arab strategy for the budget suitable for health.
To the reduction of the risk of catastrophes, which supported the Member States with risk profiling, emergencies planning and construction of skills focused on the health-TRA to which the sixth Arab platform for the reduction of the risk of catastrophes in Kuwait this year.
Our joint work on tobacco control represents a model for multisectoral cooperation. Basically, the League has supported the adoption and implementation of the WHO framework convention on tobacco control in the Arab countries, demonstrating the power of an Arab response unified to a regional challenge for public health.
Our work in sectors such as national health surveys, reporting for health indicators and digital health strategies is laying the foundations for more politicians based on data throughout the region.
Each of these initiatives reflects the power of the partnership to provide results in all sectors.
Yet we have to face the reality of a profoundly worrying perspective of health.
The Eastern Mediterranean Region continues to support a disproportionate share of global humanitarian crisis, which houses a third of all global emergencies.
Today, 15 % of our population requires humanitarian assistance – and needs are increasing. These crises require a unified and multisettial response.
In countries such as Sudan and the occupied Palestinian territory, health diplomacy and access to care are issues of life and death.
We urge all members of the Arab League with the means to do it to expand their support, financially, technically and politically.
Faced with the growing challenges, which are mobilizing the emergency response efforts and is investing in long -term solutions.
Our regional strategic operational plan 2025-2028 aims to progress universal health coverage, build resilient health systems, strengthen health safety and promote health and well-being.
Next to it, we are advancing three top initiatives that will quickly accelerate progress on the development of the health workforce, access to essential medical products and the challenge of the use of substances.
Together, we are having a significant impact in many of these areas and I am enthusiastic about what is yet to come.
Looking to the future, another critical opportunity is the pandemic agreement, which will be discussed during the World Health Assembly this year. We count on your support.
The agreement is not just a legal tool: it is a promise for future generations that will strengthen the prevention of pandemic, surveillance and fair access to treatments.
We are also eager to promote our institutional ties. The WHO/EMRO is ready to finalize a Memorandum of understanding with the League of Arab States to formalize and expand our collaboration.
