What to look for in organic sheets?
Organic means a lot. It is often used to make sure food is grown without toxic pesticides or chemicals, and does not have anything like growth hormone or GMO to label it as an organic food. In the case of bedding, it should mean that organic materials were used to make fabrics – such as toxic pesticides used in agriculture and so on – were produced organically with non-toxic chemicals.
To prove this, at least two certifications are required. Most sheets have Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification to certify that the material is organic (for example, it is called organically grown cotton, but requires certification to back it up). Usually there is a secure certification that certifies that OEKO-TEX or the process of creating them is safe and non-toxic. If only Oeko-Tex certifications are displayed, that means they were organically manufactured but not organically sourced. It’s no other certification, but it’s not enough to make it a completely organic bed sheet.
Is it the same as environmentally friendly? It depends on the environmentally friendly meaning for you. Some processes are more environmentally friendly, like Lyocell’s processes via nylon or rayon based on chemical output, but producing anything costs on the planet. These organic certifications usually only check the toxicity and chemicals contained, but it is not necessarily about whether the waste remains or whether the chemicals can be reused.
Honorable mention
There are plenty of great organic sheets out there. Here are some organic bedding sets we tested and liked.
The Boll & Branch Signature sheet is set at $279: Boll & Branch’s signature sheets are made from Gots certified cotton and are Oeko-Tex certified. These sheets also feature Sateen weaves ranging from three patterns to four to one pattern. I tested the textured stripe pattern, which I found breathable even in heavier weaves, but not as soft as the regular satin sheet.
Koyuchi flannel seat $278: These organic bed sheets are wonderfully soft and are made of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton (except for striped patterns that use a mix of recycled cotton and GOTS certified cotton). The Boll & Branch Flannel is a bit softer, but the Coyuchi seats are a bit cheaper if you want to save a few dollars.
Luxe cleanbamboo sateen+ sheet for $400: Ettitude’s gorgeous bamboo sheets are Ecocert Organic, made from 100% FSC certified bamboo and are committed to being certified by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. I’ve noticed that they’re a bit heavy due to my preference as a hot bed, but they’re a wonderfully soft and silky set, and it’s organic.
It’s not organic
Avocado Natural Linen Sheets for $549: These linen sheets are some of the heaviest and most expensive ones we have tried. These linen sheets are likely to last for years thanks to their weight and become softer with each wash. These sheets were previously certified, but are not picks as they are now only Oeko-Tex certified. Avocado is no longer listed as organic for this reason.
Mantened bamboo sheet set for $130: These affordable bamboo sheets claim to use 100% viscose from organic bamboo, but only Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, which proves that toxic chemicals are not used, rather than the source of the bamboo itself. They are a lovely and soft set, but not all the certifications we are looking for in organic sheets. We contacted Pusco to ask if there was a certification to prove that bamboo is organic.
Quince Sateen seats are set for $100: Like the bamboo set above, these sheets are sold as 100% bamboo, but only OEKO-TEX certified to confirm that the chemicals are non-toxic. We contacted Pusco to ask if there was a certification to prove that cotton was organic.
